How We Are Addressing the Gaps

  1. OUTREACH – We know that sometimes barriers to service make it hard for families to access services, so we offer outreach.
  2. EXPANDED AGE RANGE – We have expanded our age range for referrals up to 25 as the young adult age range has been noted to be a gap.
  3. FINANCIAL HELP– We know that some families don’t have any coverage for services and finances can be a barrier, so we are working to develop some funding to help provide free or reduced cost services. Presently we use a sliding scale.
  4. GROUPS – We are currently offering group services which have been identified as gaps in the community (see more on our Groups page).
  5. NEW PROGRAMS – We are currently developing some new programs that have been identified as gaps, read more about them below.
  6. COLLABORATION – We love to collaborate with our community partners! If you have an idea about a gap that you see in the community, or if you want to work with us in another way, please reach out and we would be happy to discuss.

Specialized Programs in Development

Dragonfly is working towards being able to offer the PSB-CBT program, and will begin accepting referrals in 2023. Read more about the program below:

While sexual exploration and play are a natural part of childhood sexual development, some children’s sexual behaviour indicates more than harmless curiosity. In cases where sexual behaviours pose a risk to the safety or well-being of the child and other children, it is imperative for families and communities to step in and intervene through proper identification, support, and treatment. The PSB-CBT model is a family-oriented, cognitive-behavioural treatment group or family intervention model designed to eliminate problematic sexual behaviours and improve prosocial behaviour and adjustment in children, while reducing stress and enhancing skills in parents and caregivers. (Source: Centre on Child Abuse and Neglect).

PSB-CBT-S intervention is a short-term evidence-based treatment for children ages 7-12 with problematic sexual behaviour. Most children who participate in this program can remain within the community and participate with their caregivers. Evidence has shown that including caregivers in treatment services strengthens the caregiver-child relationship, increases effective parenting and behaviour management skills. This enhances safety for all children, all which support maintaining the child in the home. Outcome evaluations provide evidence that the PSB-CBT-S model has a positive impact on reduction of problematic sexual behaviour, as well as other externalizing and internalizing behaviours and symptoms, and parenting stress (Bonner, Berliner, & Walker, 1999).

Intergenerational Trauma Treatment Model (ITTM)

Some of our clinicians are currently registered to begin training in the ITTM. We will update the website when we are able to begin offering this program. Read more about it below:

The Intergenerational Trauma Treatment Model (ITTM) is a manualized intervention designed to address complex and intergenerational trauma by improving attachment between parent and child, improving regulation of parent and child, processing trauma experienced by both parent and child, and improving parent competency and feelings of self-efficacy.

ITTM was created with extensive consultation with Indigenous communities. It has combined traditional Indigenous practices with evidence-based approaches. It is the only treatment model that addresses the complex trauma history of the caregiver prior to treating the child. This is important because studies have repeatedly shown that one of the most important factors in child functioning following a trauma is parental support.

The program involves group sessions for caregivers followed by individual sessions for children and caregivers. On average it takes somewhere from 17 to 22 sessions in total.
