What Can I Expect from the First Session?

  • During the first session we will find out the concerns and we will make a plan for services.
  • If there are any safety concerns, we will create a safety plan with the parent/caregiver together with the youth.
  • If needed we can also provide referrals to other resources.
  • We do require a parent/caregiver for the first session for all children and youth under the age of 16 (and we encourage their presence over the age of 16 as well).
  • Children or youth who live in a group home setting can come with a staff member who works with them frequently or they can come with their caseworker.
  • If you are referring a child under the age of 12 we will complete the first session with the parent/caregiver only (the child does not come to the first session).
  • We know it can be hard for parents to get to the office for appointments. We can go to the home if needed – please let us know if you think this might be required.
  • If there is a need for communication with other people on the child’s team (for example a caseworker, a school counsellor etc.) this can be discussed with the parent/caregiver and if they agree we can sign consent to exchange information.
